Thanks alot for sharing your info. I had an inop temp gauge on an 87 and concluded their was an open circuit inside the cluster. My fix was to cut the yellow wire at the big connector (upper left) and connect it directly to the back of the gauge, the upper terminal. I used 18 inches of small gauge wire and a small ring terminal under the gauge nut.
